They say defense wins championships - we will see about that later, but in the TIPOS SBL playoff quarterfinals, BC Prievidza proved it for sure powers sweeps.
Despite missing two of their most formidable weapons for nearly the entire series in defensive stalwart Naje Smith and wing sharpshooter Davontrey Thomas, BC Prievidza relied on relentless defensive commitment to eliminate BC Komárno in three straight games, punctuating the series with a gritty 75-73 nailbiter victory on Sunday afternoon at a packed Športová hala. The win officially sends Prievidza to the semifinals, set to begin next Sunday against the defending champions, Patrioti Levice.
The storyline of the series was a masterclass in containment. Prievidza’s defensive rotation held Komárno—statistically one of the league’s most dangerous offensive units—to a meager average of only 69 points per game over the three-game stretch. It was a physical, tactical lockdown that frustrated Komárno’s ballhandlers and forced them into one difficult contested shot after another.
Overcoming the Odds
Prievidza’s path to the semifinals was anything but easy. The Miners found themselves severely short-handed, missing the services of key stars Naje Smith and Davontrey Thomas for the majority of the series. While many expected the loss of such significant contributors to be the team’s undoing, head coach Gareth Murray’s squad found strength in their depth and a "next man up" mentality that defined their postseason and produced standout performances from unlikely sources.

Game 2: The Lockdown in Komárno (Prievidza 81, Komárno 64)
After BC’s initial home win, the series shifted to Komárno, where Prievidza's defense reached its peak. In a battle defined by physicality, Prievidza absolutely suffocated the home team in the final period. After a tight contest through three quarters, Prievidza opened the fourth with a devastating 14-0 run, holding Komárno to just 8 points in the entire quarter.
Out injured for most of the season, center Eduardo Andre (15 points in only 19 minutes) was a titan under the basket, dominating the paint with his length and athleticism and fueling the late surge with tremendous energy. The victory was a true collective effort, with four other visitors reaching double figures in scoring besides Andre. Guards Noah Reynolds (18 points) and James Bishop IV (14) led the way while Sage Tolbert delivered a double-double of 10 points and 12 boards and Joe Toussaint added 12 points and 6 boards to his trademark lockdown defense. "In the last quarter, we wore them down with our physical play," Coach Murray noted. "I think the defense decided it today."

Game 3: The Clincher (Prievidza 75, Komárno 73)
Returning to a nearly sold-out Športová hala for Saturday primetime, the atmosphere was electric. A raucous crowd of over 2,000 fans provided the "sixth man" energy needed to close the door.
Komárno did not go down quietly, displaying a relentless fighting spirit that characterized the entire series. Led by Tyler Stevenson (16 points) and Carrington Wiggins (15 points), they pushed Prievidza to the final buzzer. However, Prievidza’s lefty scorers stepped into the spotlight when it mattered most. Noah Reynolds delivered a stellar 22-point performance and his contested layup to make it 73-69 proved to be the dagger, while fellow southpaw James Bishop IV chipped in 18 points at crucial junctures to keep the lead intact. Joe Toussaint made only one of his five attempts from beyond the arc but it came at huge momentum-changing moment. Eduardo Andre, playing his first home game in months, struggled offensively this time but provided rim protection with four blocks. Dalibor Hlivák, another injury returnee, knocked down two timely jumpers, Bonke Maring pulled down five caroms in a short stretch…the list of contributions could be extended in what was a true team effort.

The "Sixth Man" Advantage
Another major factor in the sweep was the incredible support from the Prievidza faithful. From the vocal traveling supporters who made the trip to Komárno for Game 2 to the 2,049 fans who packed the arena for the clincher, the home-and-away support was unmatched. "With fans, it's much easier to play," said Andre following the win. "Their support makes a huge difference."
Looking Ahead
While Komárno’s season ends in disappointment, they deserve respect for making every game a possession-by-possession battle. For BC Prievidza, the reward for their defensive dominance is a trip to the semifinals. They now have a week to rest, prepare and potentially get healthier before the penultimate round tips off next Sunday against the defending champions, Patrioti Levice.
